5 mainstream PCBA (PCB) circuit board test methods

Manual visual testing of PCBA (PCB) is to confirm the placement of PCBA components  through human vision and comparison, this technique is one of the most widely used in-circuit testing methods. But as production volumes increase and boards and components shrink, this method is becoming less and less applicable. Low advance cost and no test fixture is its main advantage; at the same time, very high long-term cost, discontinuous defect detection, data collection difficulties, no electrical testing and visual limitations are also the main disadvantages of this method.

2、Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)

This test method, also known as automatic visual inspection, is usually used before and after reflow and is a relatively new method of confirming manufacturing defects, and is more effective in checking the polarity of components and the presence of components. It is a non-electrical, fixture-free in-line technique. Its main advantage is easy to follow the diagnosis, the program is easy to develop and no fixture; the main disadvantage is poor identification of short circuit, and is not an electrical test.

3、Functional Test

Functional test is the earliest automatic test principle, it is a   or a specific unit of the basic test method, available in a variety of test equipment to complete. Functional test is mainly the final product test (Final Product Test) and the latest entity model (Hot Mock-up) two.

4、Flying-Probe Tester

Flying-Probe Tester, also known as Probe Tester, is also a common testing method of  . Due to the progress in mechanical accuracy, speed and reliability, it has been generally welcomed in the past few years. In addition, the demand for test systems with fast changeover and fixture-free capabilities required for  PCB prototype and low-volume manufacturing now makes flying probe testing the best choice. The main advantage of the flying probe tester is that it is the fastest time to market (Time To Market) tools, automatic test generation, no fixture costs, good diagnostics and easy to program.

5、Manufacturing Defect Analyzer (Manufacturing Defect Analyzer, MDA)

MDA is a good tool for high volume / low mix environment only diagnose manufacturing defects. The main advantage of this test method is the low upfront cost, high output, easy to follow the diagnosis and fast and complete short-circuit and open-circuit testing, etc.; the main disadvantage is not functional testing, usually no test coverage instructions, must use fixtures, test costs, etc.

The production of high technology PCBs should at the very least follow a certified quality assurance system, with the components adhering to responsive AEC standards and the manufacturing and assembly of complicated PCBs adhering to IPC standards. It is abhorrent to do these on your own, therefore why not leave PCB manufacturing  assembly, and electronic component procurement to a reputable PCB manufacturer? Contact    Fubon Precision if you  haven’t finished your PCB design so that our  PCBA solution  specialists can offer helpful advice and solutions.
